The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) on Monday, arraigned four suspects before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos for alleged forgery of tax clearance certificate and other economic crimes.
Taxpayers have been asked to come together and form associations and pressure groups to address common issues, press for their rights, channel their demands to the government, and obtain better services.
Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, executive chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), said this would encourage a two-way communication between the government and taxpayers.
Mrs. Omoigui-Okauru, who said this recently, added that there is strength in unity, and taxpayers could achieve more by coming together, rather than by going through the struggle alone.

AFRIBANK has partnered the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for its collection of endowment fund. This is aimed at enhancing its revenue collection drive and accountability.
The endowment fund, according to FIRS, will be utilized for the management of professional chairs to support capacity building in taxation for academic and research purposes in seven universities.
To this end, FIRS has advised individuals and public institutions in the states to pay into the endowment fund account at any of the 300 branches of Afribank nationwide.

That is a good move, but I only hope the governors know exactly what they are going to into. Collection of taxes is a very serious business in virtually every other country of the world except Nigeria. Until recently, when easy revenues from crude oil started to dry up due principally to falling international prices and the criminal activities in the Niger Delta, governors had paid scant attention to the collection on taxes and other alternative sources of revenue. All they have been doing is to wait for the month end for the allocation from the central government.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service on Thursday charged 29 suspects
before the Federal High Court, Abuja, for alleged forgery of the
Companies Income Tax Clearance Certificate.
Two of the 29 accused and a printing firm allegedly used for the work
were arraigned before the court where they pleaded ‘not guilty’.
